Tons of avocados, potatoes and mangos, among other crops, have been stolen in Valle de Güímar, officials of the agricultural collective
Asociación Asagriven have confirmed. Farmers affected say that they believe organized gangs are behind the huge problem, which amounts to a wave of robberies of thousands of kilos of agricultural produce in the area, and not the low-level scrumping that they are fully accustomed to. Farmers think it is obvious that the gangs are not stealing to eat, but to sell to bars, restaurants and commercial premises.
Members of the collective request the collaboration of storekeepers and ask that they check the provenance of any produce they buy, as well as ask to see relevant facturas.
They add that there is some health risk involved here too, given that the goods are stolen before the expiry of the live period of insecticides that have been applied to the plants.
