A retired hotelier from Puerto de la Cruz has found a giant "boletus edulis" mushroom in the wooded hills above Santa Úrsula and La Victoria. The mushroom weighs 1.750 grams and is 38 centimetres wide! The mushroom is thought to be unique in terms of size for edible mushrooms, and it is a species which is supposed to be very desirable amongst gastronomers. Apparently these mushrooms aren't that easy to spot, being close in the base of chestnut trees, and normally hidden by leaves, and the chestnut colour too, means that they don't really stand out ... but this monster was unmistakeable! It's like winning the lottery, he said! The mushroom will be preserved, not eaten.
