Embarrassment at national level about the Santa Cruz councillor who didn't know what a Quango was
A story that's been going on a week or so in the local press has now made the national press, and is the cause of a great deal of mockery, and worse, for a nationalist politician, Esther Sarrautte, member of Coalición Canarias.
Sra Sarrautte was asked a question three months ago by Ciudadanos de Sante Cruz (CSC), which involved an eviction notice given to an ONG (read on ...). In reply to the question, the councillor said "that there's no association that I know of or can find with the abbreviation ONG." She didn't realize, or know, that ONG was not an abbreviation for a specific organisation, but the abbreviation for an Organización no gubernamental ... in other words, a Quango!
This is now being reported in El Pais and El Mundo amongst other national press, but is also now being made the subject of comedians' material as a demonstration of a useless politician. Of particular bitterness amongst opposition politicians is the fact that Esther Sarrautte is a Santa Cruz politican with a salary of almost 6,000€ a month.

Perhaps Ann Coulter was right
I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote. No, they all have to give up their vote, not just, you know, the lady clapping and me. The problem with women voting -- and your Communists will back me up on this -- is that, you know, women have no capacity to understand how money is earned. They have a lot of ideas on how to spend it. And when they take these polls, it's always more money on education, more money on child care, more money on day care."
-- Ann Coulter, Politically Incorrect, Feb. 26, 2001
Absolutely embarrasing. To be involved in politics and not know this is reproachable.
However, After watching that video I think they were a little hard on her for dragging it out as they did but she quite obviously showed her ignorance.

Am I the only one who gets the absolute and utter irony of the female supporter of this councillor who says that so much has been made of it because of the chauvinism of their male colleagues ..... ?
What idiocy! To use sexual warfare stereotypes to excuse behaviour that was precisely what was behind such stereotypes in the first bloody place!

I have no idea what a Quango is...
I guess it's like what happened to Pauline Hanson, a controversial Australian politician... she was asked in an interview "Are you xenophobic?" to which she replied: "please explain?". But I reckon a good half of the Aussies didn't know what it was either... she was subsequently shot down in flames in the media...

Yes but you're not a politician on the best part of 75K a year!
A Quango is a quasi-NGO (non-governmental-organisation). Something set up by politicians as an unelected discussion group. It tends to consist of friends and family of politicians (gross generalisation, but you get the picture) ... and is considered a huge perk because it's unelected, and therefore unaccountable, and you get huge expenses allowances.
... which makes it ALL THE MORE BLOODY INCREDIBLE that a Canarian politician hadn't heard of one!
