Default Arico mobile telephone masts will be moved out of town before the end of the year

Mobile telephone masts in the centre of Arico town are being relocated to the area of the cemetary, according to the mayor, Eladio Morales, who indicated that the problem was being resolved through dialogue. It seems that the three masts will be moved before the end of the year and will no longer be near any dwellings. He stressed that although there was no clear evidence that they were prejudicial to health, it was better to be safe than sorry.

The residents of Arafo are not so lucky however, having lived 8 years with a gigantic Orange mobile mast that doesn't even have a licence, which has been denounced to the Local Police, and which the Ayuntamiento promised to remove in 2006! Some neighbours in apartments right next to where the mast was erected have since moved out for fears for their own and their children's safety, and are paying rent and mortgage. In this climate, it's just gone too far, they say.

An Ayuntamiento spokesman said there were plans to give the mast its own specific territory, away from residential areas, but it hadn't been decided where yet. The Ayuntamiento would, he said, discuss the residents' new denuncia at its next assembly in a maximum of a fortnight's time, and that it would probably reject the company licence application on public health grounds. The Ayuntamiento would, he promised, begin the procedures necessary to instigate the dismantling of the mast before Christmas ....
