The 2009 Carnaval will have half the budget of last year's due to the economic crisis, says Ángel Llanos, first officer of the major, and Maribel Oñate, minister of Fiestas, and the Gala de la Reina director, Jaime Azpilicueta.
Last year's extravaganza amounted to 6.6 million Euros, and the officials are saying openly that this isn't just a belt-tightening exercise, but a drastic halving of the budgetary allowance for the Carnaval.
This means no fireworks, only one group brought in from outside the island, scenery reduced to a third of its normal size: the 2009 Carnaval theme is
terror, which is presumably what the organisers are now feeling at having to produce the best Carnaval in Europe at half the price!
Terror really must be the theme!
