Default One of the largest Solar Energy Plants in the Canaries was inaugurated yesterday in Arico

One of the largest Solar Energy Plants in the Canaries was inaugurated yesterday. Magec de Abona is the name of the plant which is located in an agricultural finca in Arico and has 33,2886 "monochrystalline and polychrystalline photovoltaic panels" (solar panels, I think, to you and me!).

The environmentally impact-free electricity generated in the plant, which has a capacity of 6 megawatts, is connected to the electricity network with an estimated annual electrical production of 10 million kilowatts, equivalent to the annual consumption of 6,500 families. This energy will apparently avoid the need for emissions of more than 10,000 tons of carbon-dioxide a year.

The enterprise has been promoted by Grupo San Isidro, BP Solar, and Banco Santander, and is the first solar energy plant resulting from the agreement signed between the three entities for the development of solar energy projects in the Canaries.

I am seriously thinking of fixing black polyurethane pipes over the top of my pergola to pre-heat the water-heater supply. The pipes will be invisible to all but helicopter pilots.

Dirt cheap and a simple DIY job. With so much Saharan sun here, the expensive north European glass shielded designs are unnecessary here IMHO.

You would think the Canarian government could get heavy subsidies organised for solar heating technology - but no.

Before our black polyurethane pipe was buried under the garden, our cold water supply during the day was hotter than our boiler-heated warm water!

I don't know why there is so little PR for these alternative energy sources - it's almost as if they are secret. It seems obvious to me that the Canaries is the best place in Europe to use solar energy, and it would be useful to the tourist industry to emphasize this.

They give no information about the cost-effectiveness of solar power - does anyone have any figures?

They are selling home kits for solar energy in Leroy merlin in La laguna for about 500 euro .
I dident really have a good look but i remember they gave 6000 watt a day and came with basic 12volt supply and also a converter to 220 volts .

I'm still renting a house here but when i buy one i will sertainly install 1 or 2 of them .

My fathers house in Valencia has 2 and all the lighting in and out the house comes from solar energy .
Even his flatscreen TV and sattelite receiver work on it .

Qwite right Torrenter , I dont understand wy they dont heat their swimming pools like this in winther . Its cheap as chips you yust need a flat roof some poly pipes and a pump (the pump could even run on solar energy)

It surly can get the swimming water up a few degrees .
