| Calimas and sciroccos have a significant impact on air quality and visibility, and can have even more significant effects on health. During both calimas and sciroccos, the air is full of dust particles. The coarser ones usually don't go much further than the inside of the nose, mouth or throat, and don't normally cause problems except to those who are already suffering from asthma or other breathing problems. Smaller, finer particles, however, can get much further into the respiratory tract and lungs. These smaller dust particles have a greater potential to cause serious harm to health. These smaller dust particles, too, get through any normal home-made masks, e.g. handkerchiefs, so these are really not that effective. One can buy special masks that do filter out smaller particles, but they can be uncomfortable to wear, and can even make breathing more difficult. Telltale symptoms that the weather conditions are causing problems include irritation in the eyes and upper airways, resulting in stuffy noses and loose coughs. They may, however, trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks. Some are clearly more vulnerable than others, particularly the young and elderly, or those with existing respiratory conditions. It's best to take sensible precautions during these weather conditions, obviously. The most frequently given medical advice is to avoid going outside except where absolutely necessary, and certainly not to undertake exercise outside. Drink as much as possible, though not alcohol, and do everything possible to keep the body cool, e.g. frequent cool showers. If your car is air-conditioned, reduce the amount of dust getting in by setting the air intake to recycle. Finally, and self evidently, if symptoms do not ease, seek medical advice.
