Louise, I've moved your question to a thread that explains exactly what a calima is, and how it differs from a scirocco.

Welcome to the forum by the way! Why not post a thread introducing yourself in the Introductions section?

No, it's completely different. Scirocco is wind from the south. Calima is the phenomenon of sand-filled air drifting (being blown sometimes) straight out from Africa. One comes at us from the east, the other from the south/southwest.

Default Can anybody tell me the difference between a calima and a scirrocco?

I would like to be in either: today my washing didn't dry properly because there was no wind. There was a still, menacing, dark blanket hanging over my area of Kent and I wore a fleece tonight when shopping in ASDA.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

You have to sweep the red sand from the balcony more often in a calima...

I remember many years ago when the rains brought the red Saharan sand to the London area, every car looked red and dusty.

Today in Kent the cloud blanket has not moved. The temperature is rising and it's really humid and uncomfortable. We need some good thunderstorms to clear it all.

I remember last August when we were travelling to Tenerife. The plane rose from Gatwick and climbed above the cloud barrier; there was spontaneous clapping because we hadn't seen the sun for weeks. Don't like it too hot though which is why we prefer the other times of year in Tenerife.
