Sirrocco = bearable
Calima = unbearable

That's the difference!

I was speaking to my canarian friends tonight, who don't really see the difference between the two.
Although scientifically there is a difference, my friend Damián said that they are both unwelcome especially in summer. He said a hot wind is a hot wind, and if the english want to give it a name that it ok , but for me I hate it whatever you want to call it.
That sort of puts things into perspective for over here!

It's true, John, and on the news they just call them all a calima. I just find the strong and ultra-hot Westerly wind with a scirocco totally unbearable. Maybe that's because I live on the west coast though, and if I lived on the east coast, I'd find the calima worse!

They are both awful though, and especially when one comes right after another, which is what happened in 2004 when the temperature hit the record 48º.

Thanks Janet for the very clear info.
another big difference is that a sirocco kills a lot animals here, the Canarians have a lot of rabbits and chickens in small cages in the garden and if these hot winds blow trough these cages for 3 or more days....
