Default Medical Insurance Advice ?

As some of you may know Margaret was diagnosed with a Primary Cancer Tumour on her chest wall last November.

She was given immediate chemo treatment and responded very well with a massive remission.

At the Cat scan there were no other signs of Secondary Infections in any other organs or in the blood.

She then had a course of Radiotherapy treatment which ended in march and on completion at review with the Oncologist was given the all clear to travel.

We have had a marvelous 2 weeks in Tenerife, the weather was glorious and the benefits to her health were significant. She walked from Del Duque to Los Cristianos on several occasions including back up the hill in Oasis del Sur to our apartment.

Given the shortage of time we paniced and paid for specialist cancer travel insurance which was very very expensive and considering there was a £2000 exclusion on the cover of little real benefit IMO.

We have a further review on 24th July and all being well would like to book another trip in September for a whole month.

We have standing annual travel insurance with Llyods but this will now exclude her Cancer diagnosis as a pre existing condition.

We have always held the E111 forms and already have the new health Card equivalents.

My questions are,

1. As anybody had any experience of specialist cancer travel cover at a reasonable cost. The company we used before are quoting several thousand pounds with a huge exclusion for the 4 weeks cover.

2. Can anybody tell us what health cover we are entitled to under the E111 Health Card... given that she is in remission and will have the consultants written permission to travel.

I am sure we have had this converstion before, it could be me just thinking we have I can't find the thread, so it must be me

I suggest a call to 'Macmillian support' here

I am sure they will know of or can offer special insurance advice for Margarets trip here.

So glad the news is positive too

Bupa offers international cover for private care.

The E111 Card, I believe covers you for the same treatment as a local it is an EU reciprocal agreement for EU residents, so long as there is the letter from the specialist, I would not see a need for further insurance personally.

Others will know much more than me regarding this & be able to help you.

Many thanks Princess for the reply.

We have spoken to the McMillian Trust on several occasions and it was they who refered us to the specialist provider.

The cover appears fine and I dont have a particular problem with paying for special cover.

However the huge exclusion of the first £2000 is the issue.

My inquiry was to seek anyone who might have had direct personal experience with any other providers.

Also Margaret is of the view that we are eligible for NHS treatment and if there is a reciprocal agreement which covers us for the equivalent whilst on holiday in Spain than we should take advatage of this.

Again I was seeking to establish if any members had any direct experince of the system that would be relevant.

I have always understood, it to be like for like, you will not get special treatment such as going before anyone else etc. as a local would not either, you will be treated the same.

You are EU residents, so are entitled to this under the reciprocal agreement in place. 2000 excess is a lot !!

Yes thats my understanding as well,

I will raise the issue with Consultant. My question is she has had the treatment prescribed so not sure what else they would or could do either here or abroad.

I suspect however that any secondary infections even a simple chest infection or virus might be more serious than for a non cancer sufferer.

As I said in THIS thread, I now have a contact who can source tailor-made health insurance packages for holidaymakers, part-time residents, and full-time residents in Tenerife ... of all ages and circumstances. He is particularly good for sourcing non-standard cover. I've PMd you his details, Peter.

I had a friend many years ago, who had a similar scenario, and at the time was unable to get cover to include his particular form of cancer.(leukaemia) He judged rightly or wrongly, that in his three weeks holiday nothing to dramatic that would require emergency assistance could occur, and that if he did feel that his condition was worsening, it would be simply a matter of getting the first flight home. As you say if emergency treatment was required you are covered by the Health card.
