the trip up to teide is a must, there is no need to go in the cable car to the volcano top.there is so much variation in the landscape on the way up(say from the west side) and even more so going down into puerto del la cruz or la laguna after being up in "las canadas"(the crater). michael and SWMBO if you need someone to take you i,d be more than happy to,just to see the look on your faces at what you,ve missed would be a treat

I hate taking advantage imablue, but I just might take you up on that. I don't think i'll ever have the nerve to drive in Tenerife myself.

You guys have convinced me. Teidi it is.

Yes you must go up there. I've been many times in the past and drove up again last year with my husband. There's no problem driving and the roads are good. I now have a car with automatic gearshift and power steering which I didn't have in years past when I drove up in my old car so driving was even more of a breeze this past time.

The air is wonderful and fresh. I've never been up to the top in the cable car, as I was a bit worried about the thin air on top but just going as far as the cable station was thrilling. You will notice the different microclimates and the changes of vegetation as you go higher. Starting with a sub tropical vegetation you reach levels of cooler vegetation (stop at the trout farm) and then up to alpine scrub and finally the moonlike lava fields.

Here are some photos I took last year in June when the red tajinaste was in bloom. But I'm sure you've seen many pictures of the route and the rocks already.

Do go....it's a really memorable day out, and don't forget your camera!

Stunning pictures Sharon. Thanks. The more I see and the more I am told, the more I am looking forward to it.

Just back from my umpteenth visit to Teide but my first trip up the cable car. What a fantastic experience. It was quite cool at the top and I was not able to walk far as I kept feeling dizzy due to lack of oxygen. My cousin's 15 year old son was with me and felt the same and he is a very fit junior fotballer for Sunderland so I didn't worry too much about it.

The signs quite clearly say you should not go up in the cable car if you suffer from heart or chest problems and I can fully appreciate why.

As a person with a heart condition I had no problem giong up in the cable car but if you dont feel that you should then dont on the other hand a visit to the national park is a must and should not be missed a little tip the food in the cafe at the visitor centre is very expensive small can of beer €3 etc, the cafe at the cable car station seems to be less expensive. The drive down the other side of the mountail into Puerto de La Cruz is stunning give yourself a treat and go.
