Default Becoming legal to work

As far as I understand it in order for me to become legal to work in Tenerife in a self employed capacity, I first need to get an NIE number, then with this a social security number. With these 2 things done I'm ready to work legally. Is this correct and if so how long does this process take?

Not that simple, I think you are best taking advice, it is not as simple as that if you wish to become an Autonomo (self employed) if you do not speak Spanish also it is a huge task to register with the correct tax etc. a real minefield.
I suggest you pm Janet & or Goldenmaniac they can advise you of charges & help you with paper work regarding self employment, you need it to be right & understand what you are committing to.

If you have family with you who will not work you need them to be covered for health care in the system too or you will have to pay for private cover.

So much more involved than just an NIE & a Social Security Number honestly.

Whilst it is admirable to try & do some yourself, some of this you will need help with, it will save you money & heartache with the end result.

Hope this helps

You will need an Assesor Fiscal (accountant) or someone equally reliable to deal with Autonomo for you.

If you are talking an Estate Agent they will not be any help for this.

No I'm a magician and so will be working on the entertainment circuit, so was planning on using Graham Paul an entertaiment agent that used to be a magician.

Thanks Princess, but I think Ethan needs to speak to a gestor. S/he will ensure that he's registered in the tax and social security systems, and discuss the best definition for his business for tax purposes ... there is more than one way to be self-employed here in this respect.

Ethan, in the first place you definitely need a NIE, but from then on, any decent gestor will help you with all the rest, and should ensure too that your dependents are registered as such for health cover based on your contributions.

If you have any problems, get in touch by all means, and I can point you in the right directions.

You are definitely staying so why not save time and money by jumping straight to the green Certificate of registro which gives you the NIE on the same paper so you only have to pay 6.80 not 9 euros and go to the police station once.
As Janet says a good Gestor will then see to alta with Hacienda, Alta as Autonomo at the social security (diferent to the number itself) and necessary "Epigrafe" - ie what type of work you are undertaking.

However if you are an entertainer you may get contracts from the agent and so not actually be self-employed but be working for them on an ad hoc basis with short fixed term contracts. Check out what way your agent works.
