Default Good and Bad?

When we first said we were moving to Tenerife, once people realised we were serious, the first thing they said was 'well are you retiring then?'

I wish! No, we have had to try and earn a living here and it isnt easy, there are a lot of barriers that we have come up against, some out fault and some the fault of others.

My inability to speak Spanish has been a problem occassionally, however I have found that as long as I try then I can get by. These days, I can understand quite a lot, but still have problems stringing sentences together (that is in Spanish, not English, before anyone says anything!)

We still have bad days and weeks here, but at the end of the day we just look around and realise how much we have around here to make things better!

Why not share some of your experiences with us all - what are the best and worst things about working, or looking for work in Tenerife?

I think that one of the worst things about working here is how difficult it is to get a contract, they are like gold dust over here. Lots of places say that they will give you a contract but never do You need a contract so you can claim for a number of things one being able to use the Spanish Health, as well as lots of other things. So if you find a job that gives you a contract you are a very lucky person.

When i first arrived on this island of Tenerife 10 years ago, i had the fortune of meeting a wise old man who'd been here for nearly 30 years.

His words were:-

BE AWARE OF THE ALL KNOWING EX-PAT

I think this put me in good stead since i arrived. Luckily i´d also spent much time in main land Spain and knew exactly what if meant.
