Not in any particular order.

1. Find a niche, there are more bars & restaurants than you can shake a stick at here, so if you really must open another, why is going to work where others have failed ?

2. Customer service, it is very important, word of mouth is your best advert, from happy exisiting customers.

3. Make sure you have enough start up capital.

4. A hide of a rhino.... to smile sweetly when you really want to scream & punch someone.

5. A good assor fiscal (accountant) & good Abogado (lawyer) the latter is just in case.

6. research similar businesses, see what your competition will be/are doing.

7. Is location important of the business ?

8. Honest employees

9. prepared to walk through treacle to get offical things done.

10. get opening documents right & insurances, also employee contracts etc. or you will have trouble at some point with officals in one form or another.

12. Have a good paper work system.

13. A web site helps. Think of how many more people could know about your business, could it be done online too?

14. ADVERTISE !

I am sure others have more too ... Good luck Tom

I think you should stick to what you know. If you take on a new life in a new country within a new job it is all too much at once and things get missed which later on will come back and bite you.
Get a job in the field you want to make a fresh start in and learn at your employers cost. If you learn at your cost and you got it wrong its too late. Its far easier to change job than start from scratch with nothing. Even if you work for peanuts atleast you are getting a good grounding in what ever your new venture is at no cost....

That´s great advice CB ... if only some of the people who bought bars had first worked for 6 months as a bar man/manager to get to know the business ...

I have highlighted these three point. I think these are the most essential and at most the most difficult.

I personally would rather deal with a lawyer than a gestor, at least a lawyer can back and problems up where as a gestor just tells you to,"Get a lawyer"

Honest employees are very few in Tenerife. i know several business owners who just accept hat they loose upto 3% through staff, drinks, giving away stuff etc.

Get a fool proof stock taking system, even if its not fool proof make the staff believe it is.

Yeah, bend and jump through as many hoops they throw at you...you'll get there in the end. Regarding opening licenses go to the Mayor, pester him and every one else. We did and got ours after 6 months of every week making a total nuisance of yourself....and no-one else on our complex had one after 10 years.

I think this is really important...
.....LEARN TO SPEAK SPANISH!!

You will get much further speaking Spanish.

Dress accordingly going to the Ayuntamiento etc, c'mon shorts an t-shirts is not acceptable. How many Spanish do you see dressing that way there??

Dont walk into the estate agent and ask if they have any quite bars, as we want to be semi retired and enjoy the sun, because it wont be long till reality and the bills kick in. Think to yourself do I really want/ need a bar like this with all the hassle and no profit

Also great advice ... and it's appalling how many requests I saw when with Horizon for a quiet bar

If we are talking purchase of a bar, I would ask 'why' ?

Example..... Miss Kittys, front line bar/restaurant, was refurbished to a high standard, in a nice area - Fanabe, staff were hardworking, had a nightly cabaret to attract clients, spent on advertising etc. in spite of all that effort still has closed in quite a short time.

What I am trying to say if a good sized bar cannot make it, why will anyone elses ?

In spite of some saying different things, tourists are the main users of bars, their numbers are down, there is a slump here as hotels are doing all inclusive packages to keep clients in situ, flight numbers are reduced, there is a credit crunch going on, value of other currencies against the Euro, people will do away with the luxuries 1st, Tenerife does not promote itself as a nice holiday destination, we hear of a few token gestures but nothing on a grand scale, like Turkey or Eygpt etc.

Many people think they can run/own a bar but it is a dreadful hard slog, long hours, Spanish paperwork that boggles the mind, it is not a sit back & enjoy the social life type of profession, those that do, are doomed to fail before they begin.

There are also many, many, bars, here already, some are struggling to the point of closure, (hence there are so many for rent or for sale) there are various themes, food or not, sport or not, escort bars, cabaret / karaoke bars, English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French, Italian, Spanish, German, etc. etc. most tastes are already over catered for, none are packing them in every night to the rafters & earning a fortune, so I would ask again....... WHY open another bar ??

I couldn't agree more with the above... Even in the UK it has to be one of the worst jobs going... My friends have a bar in Cristianos and they start at 9 (quite late for some) and sometimes don't get home till 3. They risk closing once a week and spend there time stocking up for the following week etc.... get probably one meal with them per visit and they get to go home for about 4 hours a day.....usually working there anyway

Not for me!!!

The bars I return to are the ones where the management and staff do their best to interact with new customers. In other words - sell themselves rather than the bar facilities. It must be very hard to do this night after night, but that's what separates the amateurs from the professionals IMO.
