Rates of pay in Tenerife are so low because no body really wants or knows how to work hard and I dont blame the employers

i totally disagree, SOG - i think a lot of people are more than willing to work hard if they know they're going to be paid accordingly!

Are we talking local or ex-pat?. Because the pay for locals is...well lets say I wouldn't get out of bed (in the UK) for what some of my friends and family work for here.

To increase their pay they have to be seen to add value to the company. how can they do that if they are whittling away their time on nonsense

Drop the big spoon OGS. Stirring a bit too fast

Its a motivation thing. First you have to like your job. Have you ever seen a person work hard that hates their job. Secondly you have to be appreciated for what you do. Even if its only a pat on the back every now and then. Lastly you have to be given a bit of creative freedom to show what you can do. I don't see a lot of that over here. You should know that as an employer. You get out of your employees what you put into them.

I know if I relied on work here I would be a fantastic employee given the above guidelines.

So, it's a chicken and egg situation then? May I ask if you work, or are self employed, or in fact don't need to work?

I have Canarian friends who have low paid manual type work, but I also know many who are committed, skilled, and hard working and they are paid accordingly. I know British ex pats who have built up successful businesses here in spite of the beaurocratic nightmares. Sadly I also know a lot of ex pat Brits who are neither skilled nor hardworking, in fact seem to treat life as one long holiday, they are paid accordingly, at a low rate, deservedly in my opinion.

Yes but isn't that's the same the world over. It just seems that over here the opportunities are far less and if you don't speak the language your completely screwed. It just seems that all ex-pats are tared with the same the same brush , they are desperate therefore they will work for very little. This is in fact is true in many occasions but it seems to me that employer take the mickey on this situation.

It just seems in certain industries here pay will always be bad , owners have to make ends meet so will pay poorly, workers are desperate so will work for little and many good workers will never get their due because they don't give a damm.
